As companies continue expanding their information technology networks, the demand for solutions architects will likely increase. Employment opportunities are expected to grow 5 percent from 2020 to 2030, making it a faster-growing field than many occupations. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for computer network architects is bright for the future. The average annual base pay for a solutions architect, according to Glassdoor, is $124,960, although it ranges from about $91,000 to $172,000. They develop a budget for producing a software product based on that vision.Īfter the stakeholders have agreed on the project, the solutions architect is responsible for monitoring the process and keeping stakeholders updated and informed on the progress. From there, the solutions architect creates an overall strategic technical vision-not unlike an architect designing a blueprint for a building. What does a solutions architect do?Ī good solutions architect looks at the existing environment and analyzes what technologies are available and what software product must be developed to provide the best solution for the problem that needs to be solved. In many ways, this person builds the bridge between a business problem and the technology solution and outlines each of the phases and requirements required to make that solution work. They design, describe, and manage the solution. A solutions architect creates the overall technical vision for a specific solution to a business problem. Basically speaking, you’re playing an alternative Cold War simulator. This is the main difference between the mod and vanilla HoiIV. The rest of the world quickly experiences the domino effect, facing internal crisis and new dangers from outside. The Greater Germany turns into a few lesser Germanies, jumping at each other’s throats. The Great Gibraltar Dam, or how to literally drown billions of Reichsmarks and ruin Iberian economy (a loading screen from the demo version) Sure, everything plays slowly at first, no matter which country you choose, you’ll probably focus on choosing internal policies, managing your budget and developing new technologies. When you start the game, it’s year 1962 and the wind of change brings the smell of imminent trouble. Other Axis countries aren’t faring much better, with the Iberian Union being crippled by its dysfunctional political system and Italy struggling to keep hold of it’s huge colonial empire. Finally, the dreaded SS rebelled against Hitler’s government and Germany plunged into civil war. The economic disaster was followed by a massive Russian insurgency which managed to recover large parts of the former Soviet territory. Germany quickly learned that you can’t base the economy on pillage, slavery, and spending all the money for humongous public projects. Eventually, the walls of their shining fortresses began to crack. Sure enough, the Axis powers (not just Germany and Japan) managed to defeat their enemies and enjoyed the spoils of war for a while. However, you’ll quickly discover it’s not exactly the case. The economy flourishes (or at least there are no signs of a crash incoming), the technological progress sends the first Aryan to the Moon, the machine of terror is omnipresent and works flawlessly, but ordinary German citizens live in peace and prosperity.įortunately, the development team behind The New Order: Last Days of Europe, a total conversion mod for Hearts of Iron IV, decided to take a different approach.Īt first glance, it looks like another alt-history scenario with Nazis winning the war and ruling forever while a handful of brave resistance fighters tries to bring them down. For example, how is it possible that the evil Nazis have enough manpower to occupy half the world and suddenly don’t need all those Italians and Romanians as cannon fodder and police force? (at least in Panzer General II you were able to invade Bronx with your Romanian marines) What’s even less plausible, the final victory is indeed… final. Quite a few things are laughable in grim-dark visions of future presented in such works as the Wolfenstein series or The Man in the High Castle. ![]() A Vietnam war, but in Africa (second demo version) I’ll definitely have more to write when this issue gets solved, so this time I’ll just sum up my experience with playing the two demo versions released earlier this year and following the subreddit community. ![]() Sadly, as it was to be suspected, the mod is still ridden with game-crippling bugs at this stage and I couldn’t manage to make any progress with my chosen factions. As a sceptical and jaded person, I’m usually immune to the so-called hype, but I’ve been counting months, weeks and days to see this moment. Mother, who instantly sizes up the situation, proposes that they go shopping the next day to address the crisis in the closet. Experimenting with hairstyles for a new look for the first day of school, she discovers that her clothes don’t quite fit. The Mattel/Whitman paper doll/coloring book of 1978, which was published after the dolls were discontinued in 1977, presented Skipper’s maturation in a much more indirect and wholesome way. In light of the controversy about the gimmick the newspapers and parenting magazines stirred up, giving Skipper a friend, Growing Up Ginger, in 1976 was not an especially astute move on Mattel’s part. Hence the slogan on the box, “Two dolls in one for twice the fun.” The process of transforming the little girl doll into a willowy teenager, was demonstrated semi-graphically on the marketing videos, which are easy to find on the Web. Rotate the doll’s left arm counterclockwise and the torso grew an inch and petite breasts sprouted on the rubber chest. Mattel decided in the mid-1970s that eight-year-old Skipper had to change and the new Growing Up Skipper doll, designed to bloom before its owner’s eyes, hit the market in 1975. Created in 1964, the doll was supposed to be the answer to fans requesting a mommy Barbie as a better role model for young ladies than the sexy career girl. Skipper has been an enduring character in the plastic-fantastic Barbie world. One shows that the gender expectations for Skipper, Barbie’s little sister, in the books did not quite align with the toys and accessories rom the very beginning. Although the actual dolls are out of scope for the Cotsen collection, it does have a handful of the authorized books about them. ![]() ![]() ![]() Mattel’s Barbie dolls project toxic stereotypes that have shaped American girls’ ideas of body image since the 1960s. ![]() The band’s slower songs drew one’s attention to Hynde’s lyrics, which tended to serve up devastating critiques of relationships. The album would kick off with one of the Pretenders’ most potent rockers, “Precious,” matched by up tempo numbers like “The Phone Call” and the closing track, “Mystery Achievement.”īut the album also demonstrated the group’s versatility. The previously released “Stop Your Sobbing,” “Kid,” and “Tattooed Love Boys” would appear on the record, though “The Wait” would be re-recorded. “Kid” was a surprisingly contemplative number, with a fine vocal from Hynde, while “Tattooed Love Boys” was an out and out rave up, with a stinging guitar line, propulsive drumming, and a particularly tart vocal from Hynde (“Stop sniveling/You’re gonna make some plastic surgeon a rich man”).īy the time of the single’s release, the Pretenders were already working on their debut album. The band soon became regulars on the UK club circuit, with their next single, “Kid”/“Tattooed Love Boys” (produced by Chris Thomas) helping to build their growing reputation. Honeyman Scott and Fardon suggested yet another friend they knew from Hereford, Martin Chambers, who’d previously played with Honeyman Scott in the band Cheeks (led by ex-Mott The Hoople keyboardist Verdon Allen).ġ979 began with the release of “Stop Your Sobbing,” and the Pretenders playing in Paris. Though Mackleduff’s work on the single had been fine, the other Pretenders decided he wasn’t quite what they were looking for in a drummer. ![]() The group finally settled on the Pretenders, inspired by Sam Cooke’s version of the Platters’ hit “The Great Pretender.” It fit in nicely with the band’s down-to-earth” style “totally unpretentious,” Hynde explained to “NME.” Hynde had already shot down one obvious choice, telling “NME,” “From the first day I met Dave, I made it perfectly clear that no way would it be just the Chrissie Hynde Band.” One name under consideration was the Rhythm Method, but it was dropped because of concern it might prove too controversial. With a single now ready for release, the band needed a name. I definitely want in on this act.” The group entered the studio, and, with Lowe producing, recorded their first single in a single day: “Stop Your Sobbing”/“The Wait.” Both songs sound fuller in comparison to the earlier demos, and the single perfectly encapsulates the band’s musical intentions, as Farndon explained to an interviewer to combine the energy of the Who with the toughness of ‘60s girl groups like the Shangri-Las. Hynde took the demo to her friend Nick Lowe, who was immediately interested in working with the group, telling Hynde, “Chrissie, I’m amazed and stunned. For his part, Hill quickly became a strong supporter of Hynde, confident enough in her abilities that he’d introduce her by saying, “This is Chrissie Hynde, she’s a star.” Hynde had fallen out with Secunda by the time of the meeting, clearing the way for her to develop a stronger business relationship with Hill. Secunda told Hynde that a friend of his, Dave Hill, then working for Anchor Records, was planning on setting up his own label, Real Records and suggested the two should meet. By the end of 1977 she was working with Tony Secunda, formerly the manager of Steeleye Span and the Move. Hynde found some work doing back vocals on records by Mick Farren, Chris Spedding, and Johnny Thunders, but she later admitted her lack of progress in establishing herself as a performer in her own right often reduced her to tears of frustration. None of them made any lasting impression as Nick Kent later wrote in “NME,” “Some lasted one day, some three, but none lasted more than a week.” While very much a part of the scene gathering around the growing punk movement, Hynde spent the next few years in limbo, working with various bands McLaren tried to set up (such as Masters of the Backside, who, sans Hynde, later became the Damned), and numerous other groups and musicians, including future Clash guitarist Mick Jones. Hynde was by now anxious to get in a band herself, and worried that, at age 24, she might be too old. Hynde’s former boss, Malcolm McLaren was working with the Sex Pistols, and eager to expand his empire. When I saw the Sex Pistols, I remembering thinking London was the thing.” “I could smell something was happening in London. “I left everything I had in France at the beginning of 1976,” she told writer Jon Savage. But she quickly sensed the musical action was now in England and was on the move again. She ultimately decided to give Europe another shot and returned to France. She next moved to Tucson, Arizona, but became depressed by the heat and the prevailing musical tastes (“Everyone was into country music”). She joined R&B band Jack Rabbit, but the band fell apart. |
